Course Objectives and Resource Persons

The GIS Training Course is a three weeks course offered in March every year. The overall goal of the Course is to enable the participants to acquire a sound theoretical, but more so practical basis in the use of the most common GIS operations. Particular attention is given to unequivocal definition of quality standards and to the broadening of each participant's palette of concrete implementation possibilities. The course is facilitated by a GIS expert from the Centre for Development and Environment, University of Berne, Switzerland (Dr. Albrecht Ehrensperger) and our local GIS Team.

Module 1: GIS Principles
Module 2: Pragmatic use of GIS Software
Module 3: Data Types, Formats and Projection, and Database Management
Module 4: Data Generation
Module 5: Principles of Cartography and creating Map layouts
Module 6: Vector and Network Analyses
Module 7: Raster and Topographic Analyses
Module 8: GPS Data Capture and Integration in GIS Environment
Module 9: Advanced Topics, covering:
  • Hydrologic Analysis & Interpolation of Non-Topographic Data
  • Open Source GIS and ArcReader
  • 3D Analysis
  • Introduction to Remote Sensing
Module 10: Setting a GIS Facility
Module 11: GIS Project

Eligibility

This course admits only those working in an environment of spatial data analysis and where GIS expertise is continuously required. The trainee must have basic computer application knowledge.
